The Designer

Founded in 1910 by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel as a Paris hat shop on Rue Cambon, Chanel grew into the defining French couture house of the 20th century. Karl Lagerfeld took creative control in 1983 and ran the house for 36 years, turning Chanel's codes — tweed, camellia, chain-link, pearl, navy-and-white — into a living commercial language until his death in 2019. Pieces from his tenure remain the most collected layer of the house's ready-to-wear archive.
